About
this painting:
Based on a poem
by Lord Alfred Tennyson. The maid was imprisoned for life in an island tower, making a tapestry of King Arthur’s Camelot
using a mirror (as she was not permitted to glance upon society). The curse came upon her as she turned to view Lancelot from
a window, after being infatuated with his reflection. The scene depicts the cursed maid escaping to find a boat. She releases
the mooring chain whilst singing a prayer for forgiveness to a makeshift alter, as her dying body sails down stream towards
Camelot and Lancelot.
