Dyslexia, language and identity (self-portrait 1999) - By Stu MacKay |
How Cut N Paste Graphics started…
|
|
Stu
MacKay set up Cut N Paste Graphics in 2009. Originally a website to host his portfolio of design work from his time as a graphic designer in the publishing industry, plus display his original and reproduced fine art painting. In late spring of 2009, as a way of bring art to the public awareness, he took his portable gallery of painted Victorian reproductions and exhibited them in a variety of locations around London, whilst demonstrating his painting ability
and working in front of an a audience that constant of UK and International spectators. A high interest
and appreciation of the quality of the art he was producing started to grow, but he
was aware that the financial climate was not in favour for most people as the purchasing
of art is a luxury item that not everybody can afford. This brought him to the conclusion that
he needed to find a way to make his art more affordable, whilst keeping the final product on canvas. So, the
move to printing canvas, as well as painting canvas, was made and a 44” large
format inkjet Epson 9880 printer was then purchased. The use of the large format printer
opened up further creative art print options including digitally design imagery (CGI), photographic
art, photographic portraits, printed reproductions from painted canvases and the ability to provide the service of printing photographs on canvas. Much research and comparisons were undertaken with other companies who created printed canvas and used
the same or similar large format printer. With the move to any new format or media there’s
always teething problems whilst learning the best ways to improve the final product.
Cut N Paste Graphics found that it was impossible to print and assemble a printed
canvas within one hour, as it did not allow sufficient time for the ink to dry and that the minimum of
four hours was needed otherwise the ink would still smudge or run with moisture. Also, Cut N Paste
Graphics became aware that once the canvas had dried and assembled the edges and
corners where susceptible to bangs to the final printed canvas. With the realization
that for the ink becoming vulnerable to damage due to the dry surface caused by the porosity of the canvas,
a variety of spray and liquid vanishes and lacquers where explored and tested, some more expensive
and hazardous then others. Hence why Cut N Paste Graphics now use several coats of
a thin clear vanish, that is absorbed through the ink into the canvas and re-enforcing
the bonding between the coat of ink with the cotton of the canvas and adding protection from future bangs
and scratches. This also strengthens the ink colour and helps maintain flexibility to the canvas
when it’s assembled onto the stretcher bars. Our printed canvas was nearly
complete, except that Cut N Paste Graphics soon realised that not everybody was capable,
able or had the time to add hanging fixtures to their newly purchased printed canvas and to stop this inconveniences,
hanging fixtures are now added to all of our printed canvas making them affordable ready-to-hang
wall art.
